A Gap in Your Teeth – The Latest Trend?

Many people associate America with glistening, white and perfectly aligned teeth. However, a new trend is emerging inspired by various a-list celebrities that doesn’t exactly fit in with the stereotypical image of Americans with immaculate teeth.

Cosmetic dentists throughout the country, notably in Hollywood are being bombarded by requests from their clients who want a gap created in their front teeth. A gap between the front teeth is not traditionally considered to be a sign of beauty and in the past it would have been more likely that cosmetic dentists would have requests to close gaps rather than create them.

However, in recent years high profile celebrities such as Madonna and Vanessa Paradis have been spotted sporting a gap in their front teeth. The trend seems to have caught on with top international models Lara Stone and Georgia Jagger also going for the same look. Whether or not this space in between the front of these celebrities is natural in every instance  is open to debate, but the style seems to have caught on with the trend becoming increasingly prolific.

As a result cosmetic dentists in America are now being inundated with requests to create a gap between the front teeth of people keen to emulate the trendy new look that is so popular with top celebrities. In London it’s not quite so extravagant. The procedure is reported to cost around £1,500 and ironically is significantly more expensive than the treatments dentists use to produce the perfectly aligned, white Hollywood smile.

So, it seems that for the meantime the Hollywood style smile makeovers are out, whilst widely spaced teeth are in. Whatever your opinion of this is as is the case with most American fashion trends it is almost certain to catch on in the UK. Of course, with the stereotypical view that many Americans hold of British people with bad teeth they’re probably of the opinion that we have a head start in this odd new trend.
