A New Use for an Old Teeth Whitening Solution
US Dental experts have recently made an unusual discovery. A report published in the Journal of the American Dental Association has shown that there is evidence to suggest that applying the teeth whitening agent carbamide peroxide could potentially help to alleviate some of the oral hygiene problems faced by the elderly or those with special needs.
People who have restricted movement or lack the dexterity to adequately perform oral hygiene tasks such as brushing or flossing, either because of old age of mental impairment may suffer an increase in plaque and cavities forming. Also, certain medications that people who fall into this bracket may be required to take can cause xerostomia, also known as ‘dry mouth’, which is notorious for drastically increasing the likelihood or plaque buildup and resultant damage to teeth.
The teeth whitening agent, carbamide peroxide has been used in London for years, but it was originally used as a specialised dental antiseptic. It can prove highly beneficial for people who struggle to maintain a decent standard of oral hygiene as it kills harmful bacteria, prevents cavities by causing the pH level in the mouth to rise above the level where corrosion to enamel occurs.
Experts have suggested that the best way to apply the solution is using a specially designed tray that would be worn in the mouth over night. The carbamide peroxide would be administered in gel form could either be prescribed or purchased over the counter. This seems like great news for people of limited mobility who may struggle to take proper care of their teeth using conventional methods.
