Bruxism Awareness Week Raises Profile of Dental Problem

The purpose of Bruxism Awareness week was to increase the understanding of this little-known but debilitating condition for professionals and the public alike.  Sufferers, known as ‘Bruxers’ may be totally unaware of the condition, while experiencing related symptoms including tooth damage, jaw pain and headaches.

The precise cause of Bruxism has not yet been accurately defined but it is understood to be driven by anxiety and digestive ailments.  The condition manifests itself in the grinding or clenching of the teeth, usually while sleeping.  For this reason, sufferers may be the last to be aware of the condition – often being informed by sleeping partners who are awakened by the sound of the grinding.  The condition is classed as a sleep disorder and a habit, rather than a reflex action.

The effects of Bruxism may become obvious during a routine dental examination.  The teeth may show signs of abrasion to the enamel, which can lead to collapse after prolonged periods of regular Bruxism.  Some sufferers also develop jaw pain or headaches related to the tensing or continuous movement of facial muscles during sleeping hours, along with disturbed sleep patterns affecting every day activities.

Treatments for teeth grinding are several and UK sufferers are advised to seek the assistance of a fully qualified cosmetic dentist in London, where practices have extensive knowledge of symptoms and treatment.  After full analysis of the extent of the condition, which may include sleep analysis or use of a bite strip, the dentist will plan a course of treatment to reduce the problem and treat the damage to teeth.  The nightly use of a well-fitted mouth guard can be enough to prevent further damage and preventative treatments include injection of the muscle relaxant, Botox.
