The temporomandjbular joint (TMJ) is the area found directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper and lower jaws meet. Unbalanced activity or overuse of the jaw muscles from actions such as, teeth grinding, habitual gum chewing or nail biting, are the cause which lead to TMJ pain disorders.
The symptoms of TMJ disorder can be intensely painful for suffers. Recent research into TMJ disorder has shown that a massive 80% of patients with TMJ disorder suffer from a headache and 40% complain of facial pain. Other symptoms include; dizziness, ear pain and fullness or ringing in the ear.
Winter, is the worst time of year for TMJ disorder suffers as exposure to cold weather, has been shown to increase muscle contraction, therefore, increasing facial pain for the sufferer. With the prediction of an exceptionally cold winter for this year, TMJ suffers may be in for a painful Christmas.
