Don’t Neglect to Maintain Your Smile

National Smile Month might be over but there’s no reason to let your smile fade now. While there are many cosmetic dentistry options available, just like brushing and flossing, proper maintenance should be considered.

Some of the options available include laser bleaching, tray based whitening, or over the counter DIY products. One recommended method includes a combination of these, using laser bleaching (or ‘in-surgery whitening’) initially, and maintaining that smile with custom-made trays for tray based whitening. With the laser treatment, you can expect a 40 minute procedure to provide immediate results. The tray based whitening option can be used to maximise and maintain whiteness. With this method the whitening gel is placed in a mouth-guard—custom-made to fit—which is worn for a set period of time over anything from a week to a month, depending on the concentration of the peroxide and, if you’re using this method alone, the severity of the staining.

Over-the-counter DIY whitening products in London or around the UK should be treated with caution, however. Most whitening toothpastes are ineffective, at best only preventing new stains from forming. Some of those bought from abroad have been found to actually damage teeth as they contain acids and abrasives—this is permanent damage territory, so beware. The only proven over-the-counter teeth-whitening methods come in the form of strip-based products: thin, flexible transparent bands coated with a tooth-whitening gel and designed to mould to your teeth. Seek advice from your local cosmetic dentistry expert if you’re unsure.

So if you’ve got that perfect smile for Smile Month or haven’t quite got around to it yet, remember, like anything worthwhile, a bright smile requires proper maintenance, if you don’t want it to cost you in the long run.
