One of the latest trends currently taking India by storm is dental jewellery, something that is becoming extremely popular amongst fashionable Indian youths who are flocking to cosmetic dental clinics to have dental jewellery fitted.

If you’re not familiar with the concept then dental jewellery is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be, jewellery for your teeth. Essentially the process involves small precious or semi-precious stones and other small decorative items being fitted to the teeth, so when the wear smiles their augmentation will shine in the light.

You may be left wandering how on earth dentists manage to fit these items to peoples’ teeth, but it is a really simple process that can be completed in about 10 or 15 minutes. A strong dental adhesive, similar to the kind used to attach dental veneers is used to hold the jewellery to the tooth. After a quick oral hygiene procedure the crystal or other ornament can be fitted in a matter of seconds, and once the adhesive has bonded then the patient is ready go.

Cosmetic dentists in India suspect that this procedure is so popular because of how quick and simple it is. Also, patients who are planning on having dental jewellery fitted have no need to be apprehensive as the procedure is utterly painless. Young people with a glistening jewel set onto one of their front teeth are becoming an increasingly common city in major Indian cities where the latest trends are very quick to catch on.

The temporomandibular joint is the joint of the jaw and is frequently referred to as TMJ. There are two of these joints, one on either side of the jaw and work in unison. TMJ pain can be manifest in a number of ways and this TMJ pain can seem unconnected to its cause in the temporomandibular joint.

TMJ pain can also be signposted by some symptoms such as a clicking and popping of the temporomandibular joint caused by lack of cartilage at the rear hinge point and grinding sounds caused by irregular bone surface at the rear hinge point.

Problems with the temporomandibular joint can cause dizziness, a symptom caused by lack of blood flow to the brain when blood vessels are obstructed, and sensitivity to light due to tri-geminal nerve connection with the eyes.

Headaches and migraine headaches can be attributed to TMJ pain and be caused by pressure of the ball (condyle) of the joint pushing on weak bone structure at the rear of the joint.

Severe TMJ pain all over the head is caused by pinching of nerves due to extreme misalignment of the TMJ. Pain in the neck is generally caused by stress on muscles due to a misaligned bite originating in the temporomandibular joint. Similarly, earache can be caused by pressure on the ear canal.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms you may be suffering from TMJ pain and be unaware of the cause. Seek medical advice from your GP if you think you are suffering TMJ pain.

You’ve undoubtedly seen the online advertising for teeth whitening products. If you’ve ever thought about having your teeth whitened then these low cost products may seem like an ideal solution, however it’s not quite that simple.

Dental associations have warned that many of the products sold online and marketed as teeth whiteners may actually do more harm than good and in fact may be capable of damaging your teeth. Many of the products sold online are not properly regulated and some of these whitening products can contain over 40% carbamide peroxide, a special type of bleach that can be highly dangerous. This is over 150 times the legal limit and using a product that contains such high levels of this bleach could casue serious harm and gum disease.

These questionable products that contain an uncertain cocktail of potentially harmful ingredients could lead of painful chemical burns in the mouth, which may up further staining teeth rather than whitening them.

If you would like to have your teeth whitened then you’re better off consulting your local cosmetic dentist. They’ll be able to discuss a variety of legitimate and entirely safe teeth whitening solutions with you, and although their prices may be higher than the ‘wonder products’ advertised online you must remember that this is the only way to ensure you receive a safe and effective teeth whitening treatment. It is always better to consult a professional before jumping into something that could have potentially harmful consequences, this goes for a whole variety of other medical products available online, not just teeth whitening solutions.

Various methods used to help anxious patients deal with dental treatment have been discussed in this blog, including some slightly unusual techniques such as aromatherapy. However, it seems as though we’ve uncovered an even more unusual method that is being used at a Dental Clinic in Devon.

Look in to my eyes...

Riverview Dental in Totnes has come up with a novel way to help anxious patients. They have hired a hypnotist who helps patients to overcome their fear using a variety of different methods, including sedation.

Although some of the more skeptical patients might scoff at the idea of a hypnotist helping them to overcome their dental anxieties, people who have a really difficult time in dealing with visits to the dentist will most likely welcome the help.

Some people who are anxious about dental treatment can become quite traumatised when they have to undergo particularly invasive orthodontic or cosmetic dental procedures and in some extreme causes even a quick check up can be a distressing ordeal. People who experience such a strong reaction to dental treatment will no doubt welcome any help they can get, so the idea of introducing hypnotherapy as a method of overcoming this anxiety could be a great help for some individuals.

It’s more than likely that the dentists themselves working at the Riverview practice will welcome the aid from the hypnotist too as dealing with traumatised patients can be a stressful and time consuming task. Any methods used to calm down anxious patients is a great help to the dentists, letting them get on with their work.

Teenager Eva Hulme was unfortunate enough to suffer bullying on a daily basis due to the appearance of her protruding teeth. However, extensive orthodontic work has helped to change Eva’s life for the better and she has recently received an award in recognition of this.

The British Orthodontic Society was responsible for ‘The Against All Odds’ award that was presented to Eva earlier this month. The purpose of the award is to illustrate how orthodontic treatment can be used to help turn peoples’ lives around. Eva suffered humiliation because of her teeth and had to deal with bullies throughout her life. However, today she is the proud owner of the smile she’s always dreamed of.

Eva’s orthodontist Dr. Jonty Meisner has been treating her since 2005 when he recognized the serious effect that Eva’s teeth were having on her psychological development and her health in general. He utilised a variety of innovative treatments that involved the use of fixed and temporary braces as well as high pull headgear.

The treatment has taken a long time, but it has been effective and has significantly improved Eva’s quality of life as a result.

If you’re concerned about the development of your child’s teeth, or even your own then visit a cosmetic dentist or orthodontist. They’ll be able to present you with a variety of options to help your problem. There are plenty of alternatives to braces, such as invisalign, the ‘invisible braces’ , so there’s no need to worry about intrusive braces causing further stigma and humiliation.

However, Eva’s case was an extreme one and it is now good to see her finally able to enjoy the quality of life she deserves thanks to the hard work of her orthodontist.

Accidents can and often do happen at the very worst possible moment as newly wed actress Hillary Duff knows all to well. The actress was unlucky enough to have to spend the morning of her wedding day in a dental surgery as she had managed to chip her tooth.

Luckily for her the damaged tooth was able to be repaired within an hour, but this just goes to show that accidents that end up causing a dental emergency can happen at any time. A chipped tooth isn’t exactly the end of the world, but a much more serious accident could easily occur if someone were to fall and land on their front teeth.

External damage to the teeth such as chipping can be repaired fairly easily by a qualified cosmetic dentist; however these procedures can be costly. Because of this it is often worth investing in dental insurance. Some people may have health insurance plans that cover dental emergencies, which is especially useful in situations where an NHS dentist might not be able to perform the necessary treatments. There are a number of cosmetic dental procedures that the NHS won’t perform or prioritise as they’re not considered vital, so if you require this sort of treatment then a visit to a private cosmetic dentist may be in order. Of course, this can be extremely expensive, so it’s best to be prepared and have insurance in place in case of such an eventuality.

The first ever thumb-sucking clinic in Britain has warned against the dangers of thumb sucking and outlined the problems which it may cause to dental alignment. It is believed that approximately eighty percent of babies and young children suck their thumb at some point and that it is advised that the habit is put to a stop as early as possible to avoid problems occurring in later years. Children should ideally have stopped sucking their thumb by the age of four and if this is not the case, parents should do their best to encourage the child to find comfort in an alternative.

Invisalign is now an alternative to traditional braces

If the habit is not controlled and children continue to suck their thumbs past this age, it is likely that they will experience dental alignment problems and negative dental development in years to come and that it is likely that they will require orthodontic work to correct protruding front teeth, an open bite, crowing or a crossbite, all as a result of the early age thumb sucking.

If a child is still sucking their thumb after the age of four and has already experienced negative dental development such as an overbite or an open bite, advances in dental technologies mean that children today do not require the same ‘train track’ braces as their parents may have worn. Today we are able to offer invisible, ‘Invasalign’ braces, discreet ‘Damon’ braces and even a ‘6 month smile’ option as alternatives to traditional braces which all ensure that children are confident about their orthodontic work and not ashamed to be wearing braces.

Orthodontists in the USA are reporting that some people who have worn tongue piercings for a long time are experiencing some dental problems as a result of their piercing. It turns out that the piercings, particularly if the person wearing it likes to push it against their front teeth, are actually able to cause teeth to become misaligned over time.

Many people with tongue pierces with often push the metal bar they wear against the back of their front teeth as a force of habit, and years of indulging in this habitual activity can cause some problems. In some instances people have caused prominent gaps between their top front teeth from ‘playing’ with their piercing in this way. Although this is not a serious problem that can threaten a person’s health it can become quite unsightly, particularly if the gap becomes very prominent. There are some orthodontic treatments available that a cosmetic dentist can perform that can close up these gaps, but it’s better to avoid having to treat the problems by not causing them in the first place. If you wear a tongue piercing then remember to not push it against your teeth, although it could be extremely difficult to stop yourself doing this if you’re in the habit of it.

Most dentists would recommend removing your tongue piercing altogetherif you simply can’t resist the temptation to force the metal against your teeth. Removing a tongue piercing may also be able to prevent a variety of other dental maladies too as they’re associated with chipped and fractured teeth and can in some instances cause serious trauma to the gums should you happen to fall or subject your moth to a shock whilst wearing the piercing.

Television presenter Myleene Klass has recently landed a plum job presenting ITV’s This Morning on Fridays and it seems she celebrated by vowing to straighten her imperfect teeth. The celebrity inadvertently revealed her orthodontic device during a recent segment on the show that involved food tasting. Until that point it was not public knowledge that Myleene was undergoing orthodontic treatment, but she has since confirmed that she had the brace fitted some time ago to bring her teeth into line.

Myleene is not the only celebrity to use ‘invisible’ braces to perfect their smile. Singer Cheryl Cole and actress Kelly brook are just two of the well known faces that have had orthodontic braces fitted by a cosmetic dentist in recent years as part of their quest for confidence in their appearance.

Myleene’s braces are fitted to the rear of her teeth, whereas traditional braces were either fixed to the front face of the teeth or to a cumbersome plate that inhibited the patient’s speech and ability to eat. Regular fixed braces, instead of increasing the confidence of the wearer can actually have a detrimental effect on their self-image and for many the process of wearing the equipment can cause more harm than the poor tooth alignment ever did.

An invisible brace can straighten out crowded and misaligned teeth in a fraction of the time that a traditional brace takes to have an effect. It need only be worn for between 16 and 20 hours per day and can be removed for business meetings, presentations and interviews, causing no impairment to the performance of the wearer. It will cost considerably less than alternative types of orthodontic work and no one need ever know that you are wearing a brace – unless you happen to be opening wide with a television camera in your face!

A child’s facial and dental development can begin to look misaligned from as early as the age of six, however parents are encouraged to wait until the ages of up to thirteen before having an orthodontic consultation, and subsequently treatment to correct crooked and crowded teeth. However, with modern dental technology, it should not be necessary for patients to have to wait until their mid-teen years to receive treatment.

Cosmetic Dentist

It is now thought by some cosmetic dentists that it is far better to start treatment early and correct the underlying cause of problems as opposed to correcting the crooked and crowded teeth once development has occurred. As the soft tissues in the mouth control the positions of the teeth, it is thought it now worthwhile to treat this alongside any other orthodontic appliance therapy.

Research has shown that the position of teeth is determined by the lips and tongue, as well as correct breathing playing a large role. Therefore, it has been suggested that children are evaluated as young as five in an attempt to reveal causes leading to crooked and crowded teeth and offer treatment straight away to prevent the condition developing as the child grows.

Correcting incorrect breathing, tongue and lip habits at an early age allows the child to develop correct arch development , good tooth alignment and improved jaw growth. This is likely to reduce the need for tradition orthodontic ‘braces’ in later years and allow the child to develop and grow with a much improved smile to that if treatment was not carried out until teen years.
