Giant Burgers Causing Jaw Strain
Have you ever tried eating one of the giant burgers offered by certain fast food franchises? If you have then you’ll know that getting your mouth around one of these unusually tall burgers is no small feat and can pose as much of a challenge as actually finishing the meal.

However, it’s pretty unlikely that you’d expect your dentist to be concerned about the effect these burgers might have on your dental health. It would be understandable if your doctor advised you to cut down on the burgers, but dentists in Taiwan have advised fast food chains to drop the oversized burgers after a number of patients were complaining of jaw injuries after trying to eat them.
Hsu Ming-lun, associate professor of the School of Dentistry of National Yang-Ming University reported that two Taiwanese fast food chains were serving burgers standing over 8cm tall. As the average human mouth is designed to open wide enough to allow food with a height of 4cm to pass through then it’s little wander that people are straining themselves when they attempt to eat these giant burgers. The sore mouths and strain that many patients complained of are typical symptoms of the dreaded Temporomandibular dysfunction which you might of heard of mentioned before in this very blog as TMJ pain.
So, if you’re one of those people in London who is unfortunate enough to suffer from TMJ pain then think twice before you order that giant triple stacked burger next time you visit your local fast food restaurant. Not only are you likely to do some damage to your arteries, but you might strain your jaw just a little too far.
