Good News for Dentophobics

We’ve looked recently at some methods to alleviate the anxiety some feel when visiting the dentist, including natural remedies and the pharmaceutical alternatives currently being explored in the US. Good news, then, that the UK Department of Health’s recent press release on ‘Psychological Therapies offered across the NHS’ details how new NHS psychological therapy initiatives can benefit those suffering from dental-related anxiety. The DoH published this press release in response to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s announcement earlier this week that the NHS will continue to roll out psychological therapies across all areas. This i a great advantage to London patients.

The UK government has pledged £70 million for 2010 for researching and providing psychological therapies, including targeting anxiety disorders. Approximately 13 percent of people living in the UK suffer from dentophobia, a term covering dental anxiety and a variety of phobias. The idea is that dental practices will be able to refer affected patients for therapy to help with any phobias and anxieties relating to dentists, dental processes and treatments. These therapies may be employed as alternatives to medication or alongside medicinal treatments to increase the help and support available to patients.

So, with several options being explored ranging from medicinal treatments both pharmacological and natural, and psychological therapy being made more widely available, visiting the dentist for essential check-ups, emergency work and cosmetic dentistry needn’t be a traumatising experience. Good news, then, if you’ve always wanted that winning smile but couldn’t find anything about a trip to the dentist to smile about!
