Missing Teeth Spoil More than Just Smiles

Every year a number of people lose teeth either through injury, decay or necessary removal for dental reasons. Obviously losing a tooth is impractical, but in certain situations a missing tooth can lead to further problems.

TMJ PainOf course the most obvious predicament that is caused by a missing tooth is the aesthetic drawbacks, especially if you’re in the London lights. A missing tooth can be quite unsightly and spoil a smile, however, this is the least of the worries for many people who have lost teeth.

A missing tooth can lead to other serious dental problems often caused by the additional build up of bacteria that can develop in the space left by the tooth. The gaps and spaces in our mouths are where the harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay grow, so making extra space can lead to gum disease and further decay.

An additional problem that can arise from a missing tooth is that the alignment of the remaining teeth may be altered as a result. This may lead to bite problems that can easily develop into muscular difficulties such as TMJ pain.

In order to prevent a missing tooth causing these further potential problems most dentists advise the immediate replacement of the lost tooth or teeth. There are plenty of options available to somebody looking to replace a tooth, the most permanent and realistic looking solution being the dental implant. Dental implants are the most durable and effective solution, but their cost can be prohibitive for some people. There are other options available though such as temporary dental bridges that can be removed when necessary.
