Sugarless Tea Improves Oral Hygiene?

NHS Wales has recently announced a decision to forbid the sale of tea or coffee with added sugar in hospital vending machines. This decision has been met with praise, particularly from Dr. Nigel Carter of the British Dental Health Foundation who welcomed the news stating that it will help to encourage improved oral hygiene.

However, you might find yourself asking whether stopping hospital patients from having sugar in their tea is really going to do anything to improve the nation’s oral hygiene. Simply banning sugar from tea doesn’t mean that people will cut sugar out of their diets completely and it’s arguable that not allowing people the option to take sugar in their tea is somewhat patronising. We all know that too much sugar is bad for us, but why should that infringe upon our enjoyment of a cup of tea.

Surely it’s better to let people make this decision for themselves. If people want to consume so much sugar each day that they eventually end up loosing their teeth then that surely is their choice and they can deal with the consequences. There are plenty of cosmetic dental treatments in London such as dental veneers, teeth whitening and dental implants that can improve the appearance of corroded and damaged teeth, and it’s not as thought these treatments are available on the NHS. Of course, one could argue that there are the a plethora of health implications from living off a diet saturated with too much sugar, but  most people are aware of this and whether or not they decided to adopt an unhealthy diet is entirely their choice.

People have been educated about the negative impact of too much sugar and people who want to eat unhealthily will carry on doing so irrespective of the fact that they’re unable to get a tea with sugar in hospitals.
