Gum Shields Cheaper Than Cosmetic Dentistry
If you play contact sports then you’re probably well aware of the need to wear a good quality gum-shield during play. In games such as rugby, where there’s a lot of aggressive contact between players, there’s plenty of scope for injury, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions.
Injuring your mouth during sports can be extremely painful and it’s possible to do serious permanent damage to your teeth if you’re not properly protected. Image taking a hockey ball to the mouth, you’d almost certainly loose a few teeth, so in games where there’s a risk of injury to the mouth a professionally fitted gum-shield should be worn.
High quality gum-shields might seem expensive, but the initial cost of a gum-guard is a lot less than the thousands of pounds worth of cosmetic dentistry you might need to correct any damage that could occur during a contact sport. There have been plenty of examples in the past where players who have received an impact to the mouth have been injured seriously enough to cause life long bite problems due to miss-alignment of the teeth. So, if you want to avoid expensive, painful and highly invasive cosmetic dentistry it’s worth investing in a high quality gum shield! It won’t save you from a split lip and bruising should you happen to be on the receiving end of a particularly hard tackle, but it certainly might save you from loosing teeth or seriously damaging your gums or jaw, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Boob Bombs Nothing To Smile About
The gleeful scaremongering of the American press has now turned its attention to the realm of cosmetic surgery, with coverage of an MI5 investigation in to bombs being sown inside suicide bombers by cosmetic surgeons. Quite what the likelihood of this actually happening is anyone’s guess, but it has British spooks worried enough for them to set up a dedicated team of agents to look in to it. The theory has been confirmed as plausible by NHS surgeons, claiming that a small amount of explosive could be inserted in the buttocks or abdomen, or behind the breasts in women, inside a sealed plastic sack, with the bomber activating it with an injection. With these “boob bombs” undetectable by conventional security scanners it will be a brave diabetic who takes their insulin pen out mid-flight.
Fortunately we are yet to see any reports of explosive teeth, although one Indonesian man did recently receive compensation from a cigarette company after one of their products exploded in his mouth, taking 6 teeth with it. It’s amazing the lengths some people will go for a smile makeover, although the compensation should prove more than enough to get any resultant bite problems sorted out. In fact this is a little celebrated element of the development of cosmetic dentistry techniques, the fact that more and more victims of accidents or violence are now able to have their smile rebuilt rather than live their life forever carrying the scars of their bad luck.

Check Your Bite
Misaligned or uneven teeth can cause bite problems in people of all ages. The misalignment of teeth is called malocclusion, and can be caused by myriad factors including habits, accidents or just the way they have grown. It can also be a side effect of other dental treatments earlier in the patient’s life, but thankfully all types of malocclusion are treatable.

Before After
A common complaint following restorative dental work on a crown or filling is that it is too high or thick. This can lead to pain not just in that particular tooth but also complaints from pain in facial muscles being asked to work in an unfamiliar manner. Continued malocclusion can even lead to more serious problems such as TMJ pain.
If you are concerned that you may have bite problems then you should speak to a dentist or orthodontist as soon as possible. If the problem is more an aesthetic one then it may be best to seek the advice of a dedicated cosmetic dentist to make sure you receive the most relevant and up to date information as possible. These people will be able to diagnose exactly what they think may be causing the discomfort or pain and advise the most appropriate course of treatment or therapy. Remember that not all the treatments that you have read about may be suitable for you personally, but if you attend your consultations with an open mind then you will be able to make an informed decision with your dentist on the best course of action to take.

Getting Your Teeth In To TMJ Pain
Few people understand just what a profound effect not having a correctly aligned jaw can have. If your bite is just slightly off then any time you chew or swallow there is a massive amount of pressure being exerted by your jaw on itself. A human being can actually bite hard enough to grind their own teeth to dust, but you are prevented from doing something that extreme by the nerves in your mouth. However it does indicate just how large the forces are that are involved, and just how problematical this force could be if misapplied.
It is these kinds of forces that cause TMJ pain, which is important as it can cause all kinds of knock-on health issues associated with your neck and cranium. Luckily, many of the issues that cause an incorrect bite can be resolved through modern dental care. Some of these are quicker than others and some are more expensive than others, but if you think you are suffering from TMJ pain the only way to receive a correct diganoses and avail yourself of your options is to speak to your dentist.
You dentist will be able to tell you just what kind of TMJ treatment is available, whether it be something relatively simple and cheap such as a tooth extraction or a more longer term solution that involves orthodontics. Perhaps you get frequent headaches or dull pain in your jaw and neck, but you struggle on regardless. Obviously TMJ pain is not life threatening, but ex-sufferers do often claim that its cure has transformed their lives and cannot believe they didn’t bother to get it fixed sooner.
Speak to your local dentist today to hear more about TMJ pain and the problems it may be causing you. They will be able to advise you fully on all the treatment paths available to you and the timescales involved, and hopefully set you on your way to better dental health.

Bracing Yourself For A Dazzling Smile
One kind of orthodontic treatment that you may have heard people talking about is the Inman Aligner, an orthodontic appliance which is used to straighten misaligned teeth and bite problems. The Inman Aligner achieves this by applying slight pressure to various teeth to push and pull them in to a straighter smile. Although this treatment isn’t suitable for all patients, those with severely overcrowded mouths for example, it can be incredibly effective at straightening both upper and lower teeth.
The Inman Aligner is not quite as discreet as other treatments such as Invisalign braces, as there is a thin narrow bar that rests across the front of the front teeth. However it is still a far cry from the rows of brackets cemented on to each tooth that are seen with “train track” braces. Some patients also experience some pain or discomfort as the teeth are gradually forced in a smarter alignment, but the flip side of this is that Inman Aligners produce some of the quickest results, with treatments generally lasting between 6 to 18 weeks. This is of course down to how long the patient wears their braces each day, as with removable braces there is always the temptation to leave them out while socialising or addressing colleagues at work. 20 hours a day is the recommended minimum.
Although this treatment is significantly cheaper than the Invisalign system it can be harder to find cosmetic dentistry clinics that offer it, and it may not be suitable for teeth that require a large amount of movement. However, arranging for a consultation with a cosmetic dentist will allow you to find out exactly what treatment is best suited to giving you the smile that you’re after, and they will be able to answer any further questions you have about the treatment, including pricing and timescales.
