Why would I need dental implants from dentists in London?

Dental implants are a rooting device used for replacing missing teeth and are made of titanium, which is a material chosen for its high fusion success rate due to its similarity in structure to bone tissue.

This technique is the most common and popular way of replacing individual or small groups of missing teeth. For larger numbers of lost teeth other choices for tooth replacement may be more recommendable, due to factors such as cost, recovery time and jawbone quality.

The method involved in fitting dental implants is relatively simple, but will be followed by a moderately lengthy recovery time depending on the patient in question and the amount of work that needs to be done. Before any procedure can be undertaken, your dentist will need to determine whether or not you have sufficient bone structure in your jaw and whether this bone quantity is of a proficient quality to hold the implant. The device in question will be drilled into the bone to act as an anchor for the new tooth, known as the crown.

Once it has been decided that the bone quality and quantity is good enough the procedure can go ahead. This is done firstly through preparation and involves drilling a precise hole, or holes, into the bone where the implant(s) will be placed with a surgical drill that the titanium implant will sit in. This ends the first half of the procedure and a healing time is then needed, usually lasting between 3 and 9 months. Commonly a temporary crown will be placed if the tooth to be replaced is in a very visible area.

After the area has healed the patient will be fitted with their permanent dental crown. This crown will have been coloured to match the surrounding teeth and after the procedure should look as natural as any of the patient’s other teeth.

London Dental Implants Can Remedy Your Missing Teeth

Do you have issues with the fact that you have fewer teeth than you should? Is it causing difficulty with day-to-day things like eating or just genuinely making you feel insecure about your smile? Well, maybe dental implants are something you could consider.

Dental Implants are made up of titanium metal, which responds well with the body. This is then implanted into your jawbone as a support for however many false teeth you require. You can attach dentures, crowns or bridges to the implant with the use of screws or clips to attach them to the top of the implant.

So How Do They Do It?

There are a number of procedures depending on whether you have lost one tooth, several teeth or perhaps all of them. The procedure itself is then done under a local anaesthetic and the implants are placed during a small operation, in which a small hole will be drilled into the jawbone where the implant is required and the titanium implant then inserted.

The gum is then stitched covering the implant. What is typically done if there isn’t enough bone material is a bone graft, where the dentist will build up narrow or thin jawbone in order for the bone to be thick enough to hold the implant, and bone loss can vary from person to person. If the bone loss is in the upper jaw then a sinus shift may be performed.

After the procedure a little discomfort may occur due to the natural healing process. It can take up to 6 months for the implant to bond with the jawbone.

But it is worth it in the long run because, depending on how you look after your new teeth, they can last a lifetime.

Dental Implants: There’s nothing left to fear

Fear of the dentist and dental procedures (especially those involving the dreaded drill!) is nothing new and many people – both children and adults – suffer from some form of dental anxiety or fear.

One root of this fear, particularly in adults, is a bad experience as a child. Dental students and professionals today, however, are taught how to deal with nervous patients and will always talk you through the procedure and make you feel at ease.

The dental drill: the bark is worse than the bite!

Many dental procedures involve the use of a drill, and the mere noise is enough to make some people sweat. Even procedures that use local anaesthetic such as dental implants can still leave patients filling anxious, purely because of the noise as the dentist gets to work with the drill.

For patients who suffer from dental anxiety or fear during a dental implant procedure, other devices are commonly used in dental studios. Providing the patient with an mp3 player or a CD player with ear phones for the procedure is becoming more and common, or simply letting the patient bring their own music in can help.

Some studios will also offer the patient the option of nitro oxide (N2O) or ‘happy gas’. Happy gas will calm the patient dramatically, which will allow the dentist to continue with the procedure, giving the patient their new implants or new dental bridge in no time at all.

Quite often, after the procedure nervous patients will state that the worse part of the entire treatment is the days of nerves and waiting in the reception room leading up to the procedure.

Diabetes Shown to Increase Risk of Gum Disease

Results from a study that has taken place over 20 years has shown that men suffering from type 2 diabetes are more likely to experience tooth loss than those who don’t suffer. 38,000 males were followed by the study, which took place between to 1986 and 2006 to examine any connections there might be between diabetes and tooth loss and gum disease.
