Headaches, migraine, neck, shoulder and upper back pain are not symptons which people often associate with their teeth. We are very fortunate to have Dr Roberta Lambertenghi as our resident specialist in Implantology and Periodontics (gum and surrounding bone therapy).
Roberta is a hugely talented clinician who graduated from the University of Milan with honours and went on to attain her specialist status at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute under world renowned periodontist Prof. Maurizio Tonetti.
As well as being part of the Umbrella team Roberta also teaches clinical techniques to dentists at the Eastman Dental Institute.

In July 2005 I had extensive dental surgery in order to give me a smile makeover, as I was not happy with the look of my own teeth.
Very simply, this caused me five months of extreme pain from the minute I had the temporary’s fitted and throughout the procedure of fitting the veneers and beyond.
I had not been told that there would be any negative side effects of a smile makeover – but they included sensitive and sore teeth (to the extent that I could hardly eat anything) unbearable pains in my mouth and jaw, severe headaches and a clicking jaw on both sides. These caused extreme loss of sleep and even having to stop work. I also spent several months constantly taking painkillers, which caused additional digestive problems and further unnecessary weight loss.
I spent much of this time to-ing and fro-ing to my dentist, having my bite adjusted time and time again, being prescribed further medication (including sensitive toothpastes etc) – but no real alleviation from the symptoms.
It got to the stage that I regretted ever having the surgery as it had made my life unbearable over a sustained period of time, had made me unable to work, socialise or even want to eat. I had to cancel a holiday and was emotionally and physically at the end of my tether.
After five months of this, I was advised to contact Dr Justin Glaister at Umbrella Smiles who had been highly recommended to me and specialised in this area.
Dr Glaister carried out a full investigation as to why I had experienced all this pain and continuing symptoms.
After my initial consultation, Dr Glaister proposed a treatment plan for me which involved a neuromuscular approach where he would use TENS to relax (with a low stimulus electrical pulse) my head and neck musculature, and then make me a removable orthodontic for my lower jaw in order to try and stabilise the joints in a relaxed muscle position.
I agreed to this and started the treatment within a week. I found the TENS very relaxing and comfortable. In fact, after my first treatment I had a good night’s sleep (which might not sound a lot but when you have not slept well for five months is great!).
I had numerous sessions with the TENS and each time it had the same effect. The plastic orthodontic is also very comfortable and since wearing it and visiting Dr Glaister, I have completely stopped taking the painkillers and am able to sleep well every night. I have more energy, and no more neck, back or jaw pain. I am even able to drink more hot and cold drinks. Each time I have an appointment, my removable orthodontic is adjusted to make it even better.
I would strongly recommend anyone who has experienced the same problem or has similar symptoms to have the same treatment - Dr Glaister is outstanding, and has made my life bearable again!
